Hello,

Hello, I am new in TSM (but with a lot of experience with other backup SW). I have Ultrium LTO 1 tape with data, which were backed up with TSM 5.3. I want to see, which data are on the tape end then restore some of them to different node then original.

Is it possible to do it with TSM? I am asking you, because I tried to "checkin" tape into library. Then, when I start "audit" on media, it says, that medium is empty. But I know, that there are data. This operation is very easy to do in HP Data Protector or ARCserve, but I am not able to find out, how does it work here, in TSM.

Thank you.

there is this command wich can details you wath the volume is containing:

Q content "volume name"

but to restore it, you must use the Gui or the "dsmc restore" command.

yes, but probably this information are read from database on TSM server, but there are no information about content of this media. I need to do physical scan and then restore some data. Is it possible?

Maybe it's better to describe every step I did. I made some backups to this media using TSM. Then I removed this media from autoloader physically and deleted it from database. Now I want to put it back, to be recognized by TSM and read it's content and then do a restore.

Ooo :-o ,

Sorry, but you can t retriew a volume (and it contains) once it is deleted on the server ==> on TSM DB.

the only way is to go back, resore your TSM DB from the backup ( I hope you got one) that you did before you delete the volume.

I am not sur that there can be the solution wich is tu consult a tape specialist who will retriew the data physicaly from you tape, because TSM write the data with encription...so

anybody any comments???

Hmm, that is not very positive information

For example Data Protector can do it very easy. If you delete medium from database from server, it can physicaly read data on medium a put them back to database. Then you can browse files and directories and you also can restore it wherever you want.

So, closure is, that if I delete medium from TSM server database, there is no way to read and restore data, if I don't have backup of database. Right?

one more question.....so regarding to below conversation, does it mean, that it is no possible to import medium from one TSM server to another?

Have a look at the EXPORT NODE command (and the other export commands)

This makes it possible to export the data of a client which can be imported on another TSM-server (IMPORT NODE)

but be carefull, IMPORT / EXPORT can take very long time depends on datas volume and hardware...

Another possibility is backupsets, take a look.

Hi,

well - it works as designed. Imposibility to get the data from the tape without appropriate TSM DB entry is kind of a security feature - in case someone steals your data tape then it is unusable for him. (or it is too expensive to get it)

Export/Import does not help you, because when you Export data it is written on the tape with header/content (atleast I think so :) )

So if the tape is just backup - not Export - then no luck ....

Hope it helps

Harry
