The quick start in the migration area lists as one of the steps to migrate to AIX 5.1 (Currently 4.3.3-10). However, the AIX Server Requirements and Support (top middle column) that 5.1 is supported on AIX 4.3.3 at this url: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=663&context=SSGSG7&uid=swg21052220

Is anyone running TSM 5.1 on AIX 4.3.3?

Also: The quick start guide on page 19 says

1. Before migrating, record all Tivoli Storage Manager device definitions

Can someone please be more specific as to what that means?

Thanks very much.

Hello. I assume you're upgrading your TSM server to 5.1, not AIX to 5.1.

When you upgrade your TSM server to 5.1, it will do the device assignments differently.

In previous versions you could just assign /dev/mt3 to Library1 Drive5, but TSM 5.1 makes it more interesting by putting "path" assignments in between. So, after upgrading your device definitions (mt3=Library1, Drive5) will be gone. Then you'll have to define your libraries and tape drives (with element numbers), and afterwards define the path (def path) from the device (/dev/mt3) to the drive (Library1, Drive5).

To be on the safe side, make yourself a chart beginning with the SCSI addresses, through the AIX devices (/dev/rmt3), TSM devices (/dev/mt3), library definitions (Library1, Drive5), and element numbers. That way, when your done with the upgrade, you're ready to put your libraries & drives back together.

By the way, the "Path" thing now gives your drives a second way to go off line. If a drive isn't being used, after checking the drive (q drive) to be sure it's on line, you'll have to check the path status (q path) to make sure it's on line too.
