Hi,

Building our new TSM environment with a Dell ML6000 Library. I cannot get tapes to checkin. Whether I run check-in via the command line or go thru the GUI and add volumes I get the same response in the console. Below is from trying via the GUI:

ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN1 issued command: LABEL LIBVOLUME ML6020
SEARCH=BULK LABELSOURCE=BARCODE OVERWRITE=NO CHECKIN=SCRATCH WAITTIME=60
ANR0984I Process 33 for LABEL LIBVOLUME started in the BACKGROUND at 08:22:20.
ANR8799I LABEL LIBVOLUME: Operation for library ML6020 started as process 33.
ANR8373I 017: Fill the bulk entry/exit port of library ML6020 with all LTO
volumes to be processed within 60 minute(s); issue 'REPLY' along with the
request ID when ready.
ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN1 issued command: REPLY 017
ANR8499I Command accepted.
ANR8386W Slot 16 of library ML6020 is inaccessible.
ANR9756I No volumes were found.
ANR8801I LABEL LIBVOLUME process 33 for library ML6020 completed; 0 volume(s)
labeled, 0 volume(s) checked-in.
ANR0985I Process 33 for LABEL LIBVOLUME running in the BACKGROUND completed
with completion state SUCCESS at 08:23:07.

Any suggestions as to what may be causing this? The Slot 16 is inaccessible reply has me concerned though not sure how to resolve that.

Thanks

I don't use that library, but I know when I get that error on mine it's because I haven't told the library which logical library the tapes are assigned to, after I put them in the I/O door. Even with 1 logical library, I have to do this. TSM will try to check them in, but with the I/O slots unnassigned, it will throw that error.

Just thought you might look into it.

we have a ML6020 with our TSM. Did you go through the wizard on the library to create a library instance? It's been a long time since we started using that library but i remember something about the wizard.
Once you go through the wizard then you get a message on the library window each time you insert tapes. the message ask you which library instance you want to add the tapes to.
if you are inserting tapes in the I/O slot and not getting that message then i suspect that you haven't gotten the library configured correctly. And i mean the library itself, not TSM.

I know that if i insert tapes and ignore that message on the library screen i will get an ugly error message from TSM when i try to check in or label tapes.

So, we basically said the same thing. The library itself must recognize which library (in Dell's case it looks like they call it library instance) you wish to assign tapes put in the I/O slot to.

We didn't install or configure the library, Dell did. Below is our system info report (terrible formatting, sorry:

Does it look like it was configured correctly (hopefully you can decipher)?

Thanks

I would call Dell.

This system report doesn't tell me anything, other than hardware serial numbers and firmware versions.

When loading tapes, does the library prompt you to choose which partition to assign tapes to on its LCD screen? If not, you may need to partition the library.

I haven't been checking the LCD screen. I put the tape in, close the door, and go back to my desk to run the command to get the tape into the library. I will try again but after running the command will run over to the server room and look at the display.

OK, nothing on the display but I can see and hear the arm moving in the library. Interestingly, I'm now getting a different error in the console window. It now shows:

ANR8799I LABEL LIBVOLUME: Operation for library ML6020 started as process 15.
ANR8373I 003: Fill the bulk entry/exit port of library ML6020 with all LTO
volumes to be processed within 60 minute(s); issue 'REPLY' along with the

ANR8802E LABEL LIBVOLUME process 15 for library ML6020 failed.
ANR0985I Process 15 for LABEL LIBVOLUME running in the BACKGROUND completed
with completion state FAILURE at 08:41:59.

When at the LCD screen I can either press system or library a. Pressing either gets me to the logon screen.

Ok, here's a thought. When I created the library I chose SCSI as the library type. The drives in the ML6020 are IBM Ultrium-TD5 (that is what is shown in the library system report). Should I have chosen a different library type?

Gimlet,

I'm assuming (hopfully this doesn't come back to bite me in the *** :)) lin_tape is some linux thing so the answer would be no as I'm running TSM on a W2k8 R2 machine. When the ML6000 was first connect to the server it showed in the device manager as a device (Dell ML6000) under the Media Changer devices. I updated the driver to the latest one I could find on the dell site but was still having checkin issues. Since then I have change the driver to an IBM driver, version 6.2.2.0 and under Medai Changer devices it shows as "IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Medium Changers". Should I leave it or roll back?

Since things are difficult to find on the IBM site do you have a link to the IBMtapeutil packages, if I still need it?

Thanks

Not sure how or why but I was able to check a tape into the library. Strange things (query issues,I/O errors, etc) in the console window though:

I think I know why the tapes are now going into the library. After putting tapes into the I/E slots and closing the door a message appears on the LCD screen instructing me to wait until the scan of the I/E doors is complete. Then a message asks me to where I want the tapes to go, system or library. I press library and then OK and come back to my computer and run the checkin command and the tapes go into the library. Prior to me being able to gets tapes in I would just load the tapes into the door, close it, and come back to my desk.

Still getting those errors as shown below.

So now that I have all tapes into the library (even with those errors) I decided to try a migration from the storage pool to the onsite tape pool. It didn't go well.
I received the same anr8311 and anr8996 errors, etc. This got me thinking that maybe something wasn't defind correctly in dsmserv.opt.
I open that file (from within the server1 directory) and here are the contents:

* --------------------------------------------------------------- *
* This file was created by the TSM Instance Configuration Utility *
* --------------------------------------------------------------- *

COMMMethod TCPIP
TCPPort 1500
DEVCONFIG devconf.dat
VOLUMEHISTORY volhist.dat
TCPADMINPort 1500
MIRRORLOGDirectory G:\TSMDB\Server1\active_log_mirror
ARCHFAILOVERLOGDirectory H:\TSMDB\Server1\archive_log_failover
ACTIVELOGDirectory E:\TSMDB\Server1\active_log
ARCHLOGDirectory F:\TSMDB\Server1\archive_log

Something is not right. The dsmserv.opt file found in the server directory is of course large, with some lines not commented out.
I checked the dsmserv.opt file on the old TSM server, in the server1 directory and it looks like the sample file with some lines not commented out.
Could the dsmserv.opt file on the new server be causing the issue? Can I copy the file from the old sever to the new, commenting out or
changing parameters that don't fit the new server?

Looking at the volumes in the library, via the GUI it shows 3 tapes as private, with the other 107 as scratch. Looking at the onsite tape pool properties
via the GUI shows no volumes. Q vol shows nt tapes, and q vol xxxxxxx, where the x's are the volume names, displays no match.

Thanks

In case anyone is still following it looks like the problem has been resolved. I believe someone mentioned earlier to check drivers. Well, that is what is was. With the help of a second set of eyes the final driver config was:

IBM Driver for “Changer bus enumerator” (System Devices)
IBM Drivers for all 6 tape drives
Dell driver for the library itself (Media Changer devices)

Thanks
