some basic troubleshooting needs to be done before anyone can usefully reply....

How long has this been going on? What errors are showing in the activity log? Does this happen with only particular tapes, at a particular time, during a particular job? What platform are you running Tivoli on? Check server logs (dsmerr.log, dsmsched.log, event logs). Then post some error messages or symptoms.

We have same kind of problem in one of our customers. We check 3583's LTO1- drives and noticed, that sometimes drives didn't let tapes out. IBM service puts some kind of metallic "tags" to drives and everything works...

TSM thinks that unmount went ok and tape moved to slot, but really it was in drive. Next mount request > no tape in slot > tape unavailable.

Just one case, check logs and so on... Also try to check if any tapes are in bottom of 3583 (happened in other customer) or tapes stuck in drives...
