Hi all,

I am currently facing some problems while trying to check in a tape volume which i have checked out. I keyed in the command "checkin libvol changer0 adsm01 status=no" and nothing seems to happen. But upon cheking the actlog i found this

I have even tried all sorts of parameter like search=yes, checklabel, etc.

BTW i am curently using an IBM System Storage TS3100 with TSM5.3.4. Windows RSM is off. The tapedrive is working, i can migrate data to the tapes, i can checkout the tapes but now i can't check it in back... any ideas?

Did anyone encounter this before?

Have you power cycled the library? Also I have read reports of this happening with certain LTO tapes from various vendors. Could be a bad tape, but I would try having the library audit itself (not a TSM audit library) then do an TSM audit and then try checking in the tape.

Thanks Chad, I have tried power cycling the tape library, result is still the same. In fact now my library is totally empty and i can't add new volumes or label and checkin new volumes into my library. Ran some test on the TS3100 tape library, the results were all pass.

But before i go on, i would like to add something which was missing in my 1st post. Since I am using TSM on a Windows platform, I have turned off the Windows Removable Storage service and tried to add in the library and drives into the TSM manually as there seems to be a glitch with the Device Configuration wizard of TSM Server Management Console not being able to recognize the library (http://www-1.ibm.com/support/entdocview.wss?uid=swg1IC50287).

These are the commands i have used to add in the library, drive and devclass to my TSM

define library ltolib libtype=scsi autolabel=overwrite

define path tsmsvr ltolib srctype=server desttype=library device=lb4.1.0.1

define devclass ltoclass library=ltolib devtype=lto format ultium3c mountlimit=drives

what else can i check for?

If the wizard doesn't see it then something is wrong. You need to figure out why Windows can't see it because if it can't then your manual defining of the library probably wont work either. You sure you turned off the RSM service? Did you load the IBM drivers? Don't use the TSM drivers they are not meant for IBM equipment.

Hi Chad,

I am sure RSM is turned off. But if i turn the RSM on, the TSM device configuration wizard can see the Changer and its drive. When i turn RSM off, the device configuration wizard will prompt that it can't recognize the changer and can only detect the drive. At the moment I am not using TSM device drivers, i am only using the latest IBM device drivers as requsted by the Administration guides.

Further more IM Tivoli has recognize this problem of the Device wizard not recognizing the library/changer -> http://www-1.ibm.com/support/entdocview.wss?uid=swg1IC50287

I am stuck right now..

Hi,

well, I see you are trying to check in volume by name - same result when using "search=yes" parameter? Actlog part please ....

About configuring the library - I have seen that the Windows wizard has problems so you did the right thing to use TSM commands ...

Have here link for TSM presentation for defining the devices on Windows ....

IBM Site

Hope it helps

I have contacted Tivoli support. I guess they can't figure out the problem as well...

Hi,

really strange .... any chance I can look at it remotely? I am really interested ...

I have seen that error when RSM was not stopped - you say it is, you should use IBM drivers - you say you do ....

Any error in windows Event log?

Sent me a private message if it is possible for me to connect and check it ....

I had a similar issue with a 3582 tape library. It came down to the driver for the Medium Changer and Tape drive not being at the correct level for the version of TSM I was running.

Hope that helps.

I had to move up to level 6.1.3.50 to get the unit to work properly with Windoze.

Are you using a SCSI RAID controller? For some reason, the SCSI commands or whatever interaction with the library behaves slightly different. Switch to a standard SCSI interface.

In my server there are 2 different SCSI adapter. One is a ServeRaid 7K running RAID for all the hard drives in the server and the other one is a PCI Ultra 320 SCSI adapter for the tape library.

Hello TSM consultants,

my conf: TSM server 5.3.4 on Windows 2003, TS3100 library with 1 LTO3 drive, SCSI.

I have a similar issue with a TS3100 tape library. I installed IBM device drivers for the tape library and drive. IBM Drivers were installed succesfully but after restarting the server I can see in device manager that Medium changer isn't installed correctly (driver wasn't loaded for changer, only for the tape drive) . RSM is disabled. I tried older and the newest IBM drivers but the result is same. I see only tape drive device.

Thanks for response.

Solution to the IBM TS3310 TapeLibrary Issues...

Hi Everyone,

I also faced problem during my TSM deployment with the TS3310 (Fibre Channel) on Windows 2003 Platform but solved it.

I am putting my experience herewith, I hope it might help most of the TS3310 users...

First, if possible, download the latest firmware of the tape library and drive. and update the Library + Drive (Follow the documentation for update and if nedded take IBM help)

You have to download the IBM Device Driver(try to use the latest one - I used IBMTape.x86_61310...) for the TS3310 and install the driver as per the README file (use install.exe and choose the first option - exctape.inf).

Note to ADMS member vyruzj: Don't turn off RSM, as it will not recognize the Changer0 and Tape0

After you install the tape library make sure that the Changer0, Tape0, Tape Bus Emulator and Changer Bus Emulator is there (From Device Manager).

Then you install TSM server in Windows and while setup in Wizard mode : only do the minimal setup - only setup the server name.

TSM Standard Wizard setup will not detect the TS3310 tape library, so after defining the server only we will configure the library from tsm admin.

Now, from the command line (DSMADMC) query the SAN attached TS3310 using >query san

You should see the detected Changer0 and Tape0 on the reply.

Now, Asume the following parameters for my TSM Server:

Server Name: TSMDC
Library name: PRIMARYLIB
Drive name: PRIMARYDRIVE
Device Class: LTO_CLASS_1
STGPOOL Name: PRIMARYPOOL

Now, from the same admin commanld line (DSMADMC)define the library as follows : (It is a good idea that you open another TSM command line window using the -consolemode to see the concurent update of ACTLOG)

DEFINE LIBRARY PRIMARYLIB libtype=SCSI autolabel=YES shared=YES

DEFINE PATH TSMDC PRIMARYLIB srctype=server desttype=library device=Changer0

DEFINE DEVCLASS LTO_CLASS_1 devtype=LTO library=PRIMARYLIB

DEFINE DRIVE PRIMARYLIB PRIMARYDRIVE

DEFINE PATH TSMDC PRIMARYDRIVE srctype=server desttype=drive library=PRIMARYLIB device=Tape0

Now put some tapes in the TS3310 Library and checkin the tapes in the defined library..

CHECKIN libvol PRIMARYLIB search=yes checklabel=barcode status=scratch

and ofcourse... don't forget to define the STGPOOL ...

DEFINE STGPOOL PRIMARYPOOL LTO_CLASS_1 pooltype=primary maxscratch=500

Walaaaaaaaa....

Your TS3310 is ready to Roll with TSm...
Register Node and Try to shoot backup/Archive ...

I hope this will help you guys. If not then let me know your feed back. I will try to put more comments from my limited knowledge.

Regards

are your tapes LTO3??

have a try by creating a device class with a "Recording Format" as "DRIVE"

hi,

I also encountered that error,
please try to check if your volumes are on a readwrite access also upgrade it to tsm server 5.3.6. It should work after that.

q vol volumename f=d
access=readwrite
