Backups targeting DFS namespace incredibly slow

Hi all,
A few of our fileservers are taking a very long time to complete their 'daily' incremental backups (50-60 hours on average). dsm.opt is configured for the DFS namespaces, ie...

DOMAIN \\OURCOMPANY\FILESHARE1
DOMAIN \\OURCOMPANY\FILESHARE2
DOMAIN \\OURCOMPANY\FILESHARE3

The machine running the backup (TSM client 7.1.1) happens to be the active DFS node for all namespaces, so it is infact backing up all files from its own local disks.

To begin troubleshooting, I wanted to see if DFS was a factor at all, even though I didn't believe it should be. I ran a backup of the same set of files from a local disk reference instead, ie. F:\FILESHARE1. The original DFS incremental backed up 800,000 files in 4 hours, the local disk test did 6 million files in 4 hours.

I want to, if possible, avoid backing up with local disk references because we do periodically switch the DFS nodes around.
I'd really appreciate any advice.

Thanks
