Backup Nested Directories

I have this issue where the client stops backing up and complains about nested directories. I found this IBM document

What does this do:
TESTFLAGS threadstacksize:2048

The backups are working now but I dont know how the above setting helps.

Actually, the testflag was implemented as a workaround for that APAR. This problem was fixed in 8.1.2 and above. If I were you, I'd go straight to 8.1.6 and not use the testflag.

Regarding your question, by the name of the testflag, it seems to imply that it affects the size of the stack for the thread. That would mean that if the list of nested directories is too long, the stack is too small to handle it. By using a larger value, it's able to accommodate the larger list.

8.1.4 for the client? I experienced this with 8.1 or lower clients.
