My vCenter is on a physical machine and when I try to back it up using the ba client there are quite a few files that fail to backup because they are always in use, making the backups useless for disaster recovery. My organization does not have plans to purchase TSM for Virtual Environments. Has anyone had success using plain TSM to backup a physical vCenter?

Have you tried using image backups?
Thanks for pointing me in this direction. I'm reading about it now and will try it out soon.
Do you think that online image backups with snapshots could be an option even though some of the files were always in use, or that I should use the safer option of offline static image backups?

If image backup works the way it is advertised, then this is an option with minimal effort, i.e., not to offline the vCenter just for backups.
