We have two tsm servers, one serving as DR site. We are planning on upgrading

the TSM server in our DR site first. Now the question..

Can we use the tapes from our 4.1 incase we encounter a DR situation while testing.

THank you

I have a similiar question about 4.2 towards 5.1

I'm installing a complete new server ( with tsm 5.1 (The new server will have a different ip adress and hostname .)) is it then possible to import the database / Diskpool and logging from an export from a tsm 4.2 server ?

Or is there another way to do this . ? Clean install isn't the option .

If I understand you correctly, you have your old TSM server (machine) running version 4 and you have a new machine that will be installed with version TSM 5.

Unless version 5 has some new feature (which I severly doubt), you will have to do the upgrade in the following way. You will need to have both servers at the same TSM server first.

senerio 1: install the new machine, first with TSM 4 (same version as old machine). Do a full database backup of the old TSM server to (tape or file if you have enough space). Restore that Database on the new machine. AFter the restore make sure the new server is up and at least runs (don't worry about device or library errors at this point). (I'm assuming that you know how to do a db restore = db backup volume, volhistory, devconfig..otherwise see the TSM docs). Then install TSM version 5 on the new server. The newer TSM server code install have been doing a automatic (dsmserv upgrade db) when it detects a lower version of TSM code already on the box. BUT, it doesn't always work so you might have to do it manually.

If the upgrade run and you are able to bounce the server and it comes up, then switch over all the device connections and off you go.

senerio 2: pretty much the same steps as above but instead upgrade the old TSM server to version 5 and install TSM version 5 on the new TSM server from the start. This is a bit more risky since, if you have problems on the old TSM server, your production box, then it takes more time to recover it.

I'd recommend senerio 1 because in my experience (done both ways manys times) it easier and safer (covering one's ass).
