PREDATAR Control23

I have a set of tapes in my backup , but one of that isn't mounting. My 8TB export node is aborting when Reach 7,5 :-( .
I downloaded TSMTAPE, but I don't know if it will work, because the drive can't read the tape .
My env is AIX and Linux.
My TSM 5.4.5.1 and 5.5.5.0 .
Any suggestions?
Tks

I forgot to add:
I am using HP-MSL6000 library w/ LTO-4 tapes.

Reading the forum, I tried to assign the tape to Read-only, and tried to checkout.
But it returns the same error:

Thomaz,

There are many possibilities. Please supply the following outputs

q dr
q path

Also the actual checkout libv command you used.

I checked out using:

Worked, but when tried checkin (using menu)

if I try checklabel = no, will work ?
Entering q content, returns w/ the data I need.

PREDATAR Control23

Try:

CHECKIN LIBVOLUME MSL6000 SEARCH=BULK STATUS=PRIVATE CHECKLABEL=barcode MOUNTWAIT=0

then:

q req

If there is a request, "reply <request_number>"

The tape was loaded correctly, but if I try to export node , the system won´t read the data inside.
I can´t try because if I use toserver option, can´t assign that tape . And the process delays 20 hs approx.
Tks anyway.

PREDATAR Control23

I can see the data I need using : q content vol <vol>.
1. Can I use this information to export node ?
2. In That export is missing only this tape. Should I use TSMTAPE to recover these files ?
The problem is: when I try to mount , the system returns w/ error.
The list of files I get , probably comes from the TSM database.

PREDATAR Control23

If the export aborts on this tape, I can only assume that the backup data that is on the tape is damaged or incomplete.

Have you tried to do an audit of the tape with fix=yes?

If the result is positive and the export still fails, then you may have an incomplete backup on the tape. Do have a DR copy of this tape?

I doubt if TSMTAPE can help you but you can try. See this link.

PREDATAR Control23

Yes, I tried audit w/ fix=yes and the tape still can't mount.
No, here they said we don't have another backup containing this files :-( .
I am not sure if TSMTAPE will help me because the drive couldn't read the tape.
I am reading the link you sent, but seems a lot of hard work, confusing.

Looks like you are out of luck.

If you can mount the tape and do an audit, you may be able to do something. And, yes, TSMTAPE may not be able to help you.

If you read above, you see I can't do an audit. I didn't try to mount yet.

PREDATAR Control23

You are saying to audit without fix=yes option ?
The tape is there, I can see typing "q libv ", but if I Start the "export node toserver..." The proccess will hang when try to Mount that tape.
Any suggestions ?

I am saying do an audit with fix=yes. If this fails, then you are out of luck - DATA LOST since you don't have a DR for this.

PREDATAR Control23

Thomaz,

Please confirm if this is your current situation, and if it isn't please reply with a concise summary of your current problem.

You are unable to mount a primary volume PS0240, which is an LTO-4 tape. Any attempt to mount the tape comes back with "storage media inaccessible". And you confirmed that the output of "q libv * PS0240" reports that TSM believes the tapes is in the library. Furthermore, a visual inspection of the library and a review of the library inventory via some management console also indicates the tape is in the library and known to the library.

Do you create copypool tapes? I did not see that mentioned anywhere, or perhaps missed it.

Does "q vol PS0240 f=d" show the volume as access=read or read/write? If it is not either of those two status' then update the volume to access=read and try the audit again with fix=no, just to see if it will mount.

If the volume is one of the above status' then use the library console to eject the tape and visually inspect it for damage. It is possible that some damage to the tape might be preventing the tape from loading into the drive. If possible look into the library while you perform an audit just to see if the gripper will actually move the tape to a drive. You can also try this by using the console to simply load the volume into a drive and watch the behavior.

Now, here are your options:
  • If the tape does move to a drive and fails to load, or is visually inspected as damaged and
    • you do not have any copypool tapes, then data is lost unless you can somehow "repair" whatever physical damage is preventing the load, and try again.
    • you do have copypool volumes, then you need to perform a "restore vol ... preview=yes" and recall the volumes specified in the actlog and restore that volume.
  • If the tape does not even get picked up by the gripper perhaps there is a problem with the label. Inventory the library from the library console and see if the tape disappears from the inventory. Note, you will also need to run the TSM "audit library ... checklabel=barcode" afterwards.

Thomaz,

Please fully read my prior post. There were many other actions listed other than a simple audit volume.
