This was because the tar and gzip/gunzip
commands on HP-UX 11.11 are not the same as the ones the average Linux distro
would have. Essentially the HP-UX versions couldn't handle files larger
than 2 GB (despite the fact the filesystem itself could). I was able to solve
the problem by moving the bundled file off to a Linux server and doing the tar
extraction and gunzip there then moving the uncompressed file back to HP-UX. Note
that before doing that I did try using the tar that comes with NetBackup since
it is a modified GNU tar but that didn't help. We've also seen some fun issues with compress utilities on Solaris (and possibly HP-UX - I can' remember). The compress would set the creation date of the compressed file to the creation date of the archive log. This caught us early on when the compressed file appeared to have been created *before* the last backup so the next backup would skip it. A simple "touch" on the compressed file solved that problem.
As always, test your backups. At a minimum, do a regular bplist to make sure you're backing up what you're supposed to be backing up.
