All-

As part of a debugging effort for a problem we've been seeing with nsrck
-L7 not being able to load any index (it complains about cloneid retention
time for the index), EMC support had us upgrade our NetWorker server from
7.4.2 (no patches) to 7.4.4.4. The server in question is running on Red
Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.3 on a 32 bit system.

Since upgrading, we've experienced a huge increase in the number of
backup failures we're seeing backing up our Novell NetWare boxes. The
NetWare systems are 6.5sp 7 with relevant patches and the NetWorker 7.2.1
client with the security patch applied (i.e. the latest NetWare client
available on Powerlink).

Nothing changed on any of the clients. They were backing up pretty
reliably (the most reliably they ever had been) with the prior 7.4.2
server software. Now, every night we have a couple of clients fail some
but not all of their backups with:

* nwclient.ndsu.nodak.edu:TEMP: SAVE.NLM: RPC warning: RPC cannot make a
procedure call: Create failed: Remote system error - Connection timed out
* nwclient.ndsu.nodak.edu:TEMP: * nwclient.ndsu.nodak.edu:TEMP: SAVE.NLM: Cannot open SAVE.NLM session
with networkerserver.nodak.edu

Again, nothing was changed on the clients or the network (e.g. there's no
firewall involved). We've long used /etc/hosts entries on the server for
just these clients and sys:/etc/hosts entries for the server on each of
the clients, since back in the day DNS seemed to be the biggest problem
for the client software.

The one single thing that's changed is the Networker server upgrade from
7.4.2 to 7.4.4.4.

For those few of you out there backing up NetWare clients, have you seen
increased RPC failures with later versions of 7.4.x?

We have a call open with EMC, but I'm wondering if others are experiencing
the same problem.
