I'm looking for a way to pull logs from remote TSM clients and servers to a
central machine, as part of a "single point of control" effort. I'd like to
bring the schedule.log files from clients, and also things like the
dsmaccnt.log from a remote server in to my management server for analysis.

"Normal" options such as ftp, nfs mounts, rcp, etc. are not available to me, as
we have a quite restricted environment.

I'm wondering about the feasibility of using TSM itself (3.7.3 on aix) to back
up those remote files to my central TSM server. To allow scripts on my central
server to grep through the logs, etc., I'd then need to issue a restore for
those files and write them to filesystems on my central server. I could use a
scheduled client command to perform a backup of the specific file I want on the
remote client, then issue a restore on the local client, using virtual
nodenames, etc.

It sounds possible, but mildly ugly.

Has anyone done any work in this area or have suggestions on how to do this
using TSM facilities, without getting too much like a Rube Goldberg
contraption?? (reference-
http://www.rube-goldberg.com/pencil_sharpener.htm )

The Netbackup product, for example, has an undocumented command (bpgp) that
will do this in one step. Is there an easy way to get TSM to do this too?

Thanks....JRS.
