Hello Kyle
This is a change in direction for the *sm folks. At one time they said
that if the two systems were both able to use a common hardware
device then the export/import could be done.
One can write different device drivers on two systems and use a common
data formats on the media. Or the driver on the importing side can
understand how to read both of the tape formats.
Of course the oe client on mvs may raise other problems then the tape
format. From the apars out there it appears that they may have stored
some of the data in ebcdic instead of some common character set.
I have three possible work arounds. One of which would require the *sm
folks to release some internal info.
1) Do you have enought disk space that you could export the node data
to device file. Then import via the file data. Either via nsf from
the os/390 system or ftp over to the open system. IBM would have
to let you know if you should use a binary transfer and how to
handle line-end characters. This solution might have character set
issues.
2) If the problem is only the header blocks. If IBM is willing, then
you could read the tape with a program that allows low level
work with the data and then write it out on a new tape with tape
headers in the correct format. This could be using something like
the pipelines product. Or read the header block into a file. Modify
it or create a new one and write it out to the new tape.
This would require that IBM give you the formats of both of the tape
formats. The tape conversion does not have to be done on os/390,
You could use vm and cms/pipelines, unix and dd, or a c program, perl,
etc. Could be iebgener and edit( I hope I spelled iebgener correctly).
3) Get IBM to give you a patch to the receiving *sm server that will
do step 2 in their import code. Or a patch to the export system...
Please let us know if you are able to work this out. It appears that
we will be moving our os/390 backups from a vm server to a nt
server.
