Len, the problem is probably that in the MVSserver the 9840's are defined as
3490 or 3590 because that is how they are known to MVS. In the past it was only
3490 (we run like that) but i think that at the moment or else very soon they
wil also support 3590-mode. The way i would go is to set up server to server
communications between your MVS and NT server.
Then you use for your export a server-to-deviceclass that uses tapes on the NT
machine. For the import you read these tapes (NT wrote them so it should be abel
to read them).
This works (we have to do a migration from VM to MVS (incompattible media) and
an IBM system engineer tested it between MVS and NT in this way to test the
principle(they didn't have a VMserver in Belgium).
This way you stil have a large outage window if you have wan't to do the whole
server at once or if you have huge clients.
Has anybody tried using a copypool on the other server and also having the
databasebackups there and then setting up a server on the new platform setting
up server to server communication with the server where your backups are , do a
restore from there, delete your primary pool and recover from your copypool?
This way the outage should be minimum.
It only works if there is no serverplatforminformation on the backuptapes. I
haven't tested it yet but it would be nice if it worked.
Koen Leeten.
