Hi Todd,

many thanks for your email and your concerns/ questions which I'll try to
answer/ clarify for everyone's benefit as I've obviously created some
confusion and ruffled a few feathers which wasn't my intention.

I'd like to state that the reason I initially posted the question was to
gauge the need/ reaction from the list for volunteering to do this. If
everyone feels this wouldn't be useful then that's fine I'll forget the
idea. Anyway, to answer your questions/ issues:

Q: Perhaps. But a non-user of a tool doesn't make a very good FAQ
coordinator.

A: I agree, but as no-one seems to be doing this (as far as I'm aware please
let me know if I'm wrong), it seems a shame that the great content that is
posted to this list is lost to the archives. I've found that a lot of
information posted to a list like this one is real life experience and
contains hints, tips, etc. that people have learned the hard way and are
usually willing to share. I do use Tivoli (Framework, Software Distribution,
Inventory, amongst others), which is why I set the Tivoli section up in the
first place. When I was advised of this list's existence it seemed a natural
extension to the Tivoli section.

Q: I'm going to question what specific permission you were able to obtain
from them if any?

A: I was under the impression that as IBM/Tivoli facilitate the
infrastructure that runs the list and therefore can control who can and
cannot join it, that they would be the 'owners'. I approached the list owner
to get their permission who was only to happy to grant it. Thankyou for the
links to the FAQs on copyright. Any information I use from any of these
lists always shows those that contributed to the article - I'm not after
taking the credit or ripping off somebody else's work. Where attachments,
scripts, documents, etc. are involved I always seek permission of the owner
to post the information before doing so - I don't want to go treading on
people's toes as I'd feel more than a little upset if someone posted
something I'd developed without my permission.

Q: Did I miss anything?

A: I'm not talking of making millions here. The only reason I'm looking for
financial support for the site is to allow me to dedicate more time to it.
At the moment I run the site in my spare time. Ideally I'd like to be able
to do it on a fulltime basis but like the majority of us I have commitments
such as a mortgage, bills, etc. I'm only looking for revenue to allow me to
support myself not retire. Access to the site and the information contained
on it is and will remain free. I'm not expecting people to welcome me with
open arms or be a hero, just offer a free service that makes people's lives
easier and includes information gained from personal experience and from
others willing to share. The idea has worked VERY successfully for the SMS
community from which I've received nothing but thanks and praise. The site
is my way of giving something back to communities such as this who have
helped me out in times of need. As I'm now working with Tivoli products it
seemed logical to add a Tivoli section to the site. As far as the archives
go, it would be nice for me to able to extract and make the information
available from them over time, but if it doesn't happen then fair enough.

Q: I think you need to be very careful about copyright on such a site. If
you're using anything someone has written as part of a FAQ without their
express permission, and are generating click through or ad revenue from it,
you're going to have BIG problems from a lot of angry people.

A: Thanks for this. I do use information from resources such as newsletters
or other articles but have always obtained permission from the owner first,
or written my own summary/extract and then provided a link to the material
in full. The majority of people seem happy with this but I appreciate not
everyone might be - thanks for the tip.

At the end of the day I'd like to apologise if I've come across as an
'outsider' trying to ripoff or take over this list. That was never my
intention and I apologise if if I've upset you or anyone else on the list.

I hope I've all of your points. If you or anyone else has any comments or
questions regarding the site or my using information from the list please
let me know or mail me offlist.

For now I'll hold off with the netView section of the FAQ unless the
consensus of the list is that people feel it would be useful.

Many thanks and kind regards,
Cliff

Perhaps. But a non-user of a tool doesn't make a very good FAQ
coordinator.

Well that's certainly interesting. Tivoli/IBM doesn't own the content
from this list, so I'm going to question what specific permission you
were able to obtain from them if any. Copyrights are maintained by
individual contributors. If you want to take list content and post it
to a web page, to do things correctly, you would need permission of
the author.

Are you familiar with this FAQ?
http://www.templetons.com/brad/copymyths.html

or this one?

I'm sorry if I haven't welcomed you with open arms, but you're new to
the community, talking of making commercial revenue with the works of
others, and you'd like someone to make your life easier by sending you
the archives of the list in a convenient format so you can plunder it
for content on your site to generate ad revenue?

Did I miss anything?

I think you need to be very very careful about copyright on such a
site. If you're using anything someone has written as part of a FAQ
without their express permission, and are generating click through or
ad revenue from it, you're gonna have BIG problems from a lot of
angry people.
