When I researched all this about 3 years ago going from UNIX to another UNIX or Linux wasn’t an issue so  long as you kept the same name.   Changing host names was a major issue if you wanted to migrate the catalog and required PS.   In the end we opted to simply build an entirely new master on Linux and keep the old UNIX master (with different name) running for a while so it could expire tapes that had been vaulted so we’d know when to recall them from off site.

We also changed from Ultrium1 to Ultrium 5 drives and the Ultrium5 wouldn’t use the Ultrium1 tapes – we bought 2 Ultrium3 drives so we could do two phase import for any tape we wanted in the new catalog – to this point I’ve only had to do that a couple of times.   Our new library was partitionable so we were able to assign one tape drive to the old master which we found was required for it to run as a tape media server for vaulting purposes even though we weren’t actually writing to or reading any tapes on it.

Windows to UNIX/Linux (or vice versa) doesn’t work very well even for trying to restore backups so I’d say what you want isn’t really possible.   Given that you’re left with going with PS or doing something similar to what we did.

If it is possible, I would run 2 parallel environments, one being your existing and the other being the new with your linux master.  Start backing up to the new and keep the old around until all of your backup images expire.  I went from an AIX master to Linux which is entirely doable without all of the professional services hubub, but it was easier to me to just migrate to the new through attrition.

The one caveat is you cannot share a media server between the two master servers.  If you have only a single tape subsystem that cannot be shared between two hosts, that will limit your options.

I want to change my windows master to a linux master.  Is this doable?  I am told by symantec that the catalog directory structure and the block sizes written differ between the 2 and this will require professional services to accomplish.  Has anyone done this?
