Based on my experience with this in the last year, I would have to
disagree.
The Ultrium series drives use a RFID chip in each cart which identifies
the cart type to the drive.
When you put an LTO2 cart into an LTO3 drive, it is detected as such,
and the LTO3 drive will write to the tape in the "down-rev" format, so
that the tape can continue to be read/written to, in the LTO2 drives.
 
keep in mind...
 
LTO drive will read and write LTO media
LTO2 drive will read and write both LTO2 and LTO media.
LTO3 drive will read and write both LTO3 and LTO2 media, as well as READ
LTO media.
 
Even once an LTO3 drive writes an LTO2 tape, or an LTO2 drive writes an
LTO tape, the above hierarchy still applies.
