It sounds like a misconfigured hosts file (persumed you're using Windows) 
otherwise I mean the U/Linux equivalent

All of our backups are failing with the message:

     * <ERROR> :  Failed with error(s)

Only the index is failing to back up.  The rest of the savesets backup fine.

I've cleared the nsr\tmp directory and the jobsdb directories and rebooted the 
server but that didn't help.

Anybody have a clue how to fix that?
