Re: [Networker] New EMC Celerra - want to backup via NDMP

In the NDMP documentation this is known as a three-way NDMP session if the
data and tape are not on the same NAS system.
However, the tape drive must be an NDMP device, theoretically this can from
any supplier but practically this is not always guaranteed. With 7.2 you can
use NDMP Tape service on a storage node, the server also but not documented,
to backup from a NAS (such as Celerra) to a local tape device throught the
NDMP Tape service. Just one thing to note, there is an additional
parameter -M for nsrndmp_save to indicate that your are using the NDMP Tape
service.
Once upon a time, a few years ago, I played with three-way NDMP between
NetApp and Celerra. Except for the NDMP bugs we found at that time I do
remember that we got it to work evenso it was not officially supported at
the time.
Btw: Legato has done a good job confusing everybody in the documentation on
this point. If you read the 7.2 documentation then you get the impression
that it could work right out of the box. And if you start searching then you
will find the NDMP Tape service hidden in between a lot of other things on
the website. I don't have any information on licensing but I am sure it will
cost a small fortune if you do not have an enterprise license.
Another interesting thing to mention is that the use of three-way NDMP on
the Celerra is documented in the Legato AND the Celerra documentation.
Bye

Hi Michael
Without (yet) answering your questions directly, please consider taking
a
look at the new features available in NetWorker V7.2. There are HUGE
changes relating to NDMP, and I think you'll like the additional options
this release will give you.
That doesn't help me today. I asked if something worked a certain way
and your answer is upgrade to 7.2. I just want to know if I can use
NDMP across the LAN to backup an EMC Celerra, or does Celerra require
attached/SAN storage.
Is there some reason why you can't test it in your environment?
