To be fair to RedHat, I don't think it's their fault that this version of the driver is included. RedHat are still using 2.4.x kernels in all but the very newest of their distros, but even if they had moved to 2.6.x the version in use would STILL be 6.2.36. I have a gentoo system with kernel 2.6.10, and the aic module is 6.2.36, and yes I do have unresolved problems with my Adaptec cards.

It's up to the kernel maintainers to decide when to up-rev any particular third party modules. I suppose RedHat could supply their own mods to the kernel in their distro but I don't think this is common practice.
