Re: [Networker] Legato Server Inquiry

A low end Solaris box (U10 or like)(so long as it is SCSI based) will be a
cheaper solution for you by giving you a cheaper TCO in a very short time. We
backup 38 Serious servers to a U10 with a L1000 attached.

Grant,

bottle neck is I/O. The backup server is handling each of the following:
client index
media index
data to tape drives
data from clients
meta data from clients/storage nodes
polling storage nodes to make certain their still alive
Get the biggest and badest I/O subsystem you can find. Make sure you
completely understand how many PCI slots are controlled by each
bridge chip as its very easy to flood one.
Our recommendation is to make the backup server an index server and
robotics mover (if you're using a library) only. Point the clients to a
storage node.
A consultant told us a good rule of thumb is two tape drives per processor.
Our four Xeon 700MHz processors and 2GB of RAM are handling their part of
the
mix with ease. We have 10 tape drives assigned to the backup server.

Hello All,
We are planning to purchase a dedicated Legato Networker server. We
would like to know if you can provide us the specification/feature of an
Intel server which can handle our backups and tape library.
example: type of processor+speed, memory, etc.
Our environment:
Tape Library - StorageTeK 9714 (Timberwolf)
6 DLT 7000 tape drives
40 slots
Client:
20+ mixed Netware, Win/NT, Win2000 servers
15 RS/6000 servers
