How big are your backups?

I think it is bad form to suggest changing your tools, but in this case,
it was suggested to me a few years ago and I do not regret it.

I went to DLT from DDS a few years back (7 or 8?). Granted, most people
are using LTO today.  I managed to pick up some very good used DLT drives
and tapes.  They are much sturdier than DDS.

FWIW...YMMV.
