The machine has gobs of disk space, more by far than any other windows client I have.  However, it still sounds plausible that it is a VSS issue.  I will try the no-VSS option.

Maybe it is a VSS issue? Does the machine have enough free disk space? Does
the backup hang if you switch VSS off in Bacula?

I'm starting to feel pretty lonesome on this issue. I have no idea
where to turn. It's got to be something peculiar with this client,
since I'm backing up 30 other windows workstations every night without
any such problems.

I have a windows fd that keeps hanging. It doesn't do it every day,
but once it hangs it seems to need a reboot to get unwound. Today I
found it hung in the middle of a differential backup, so I killed the
fd, and restarted it, and then restarted the backup.

It hung after emitting this line:

    28-May 11:06 liz2-fd JobId 17505: Generate VSS snapshots.
    Driver="VSS WinXP", Drive(s)="C"

When I did "net stop bacula-fd" on the client, bacula-fd crashed, and
windows wanted to send a report to Microsoft, which I declined to do.

I logged in on the client and it was sitting there with the cpu 100%
idle. The "status client" looked like this:

    *status client=liz2-fd

I've also pretty much ruled out any network problems:

    [root@packrat ~]# ping -c 10 -s 1472 -q liz2
    PING liz2.intranet.seamanpaper.com (192.168.10.84) 1472(1500)
    bytes of data.

How can I find out what's going on?
