I think your questions are matter of taste /  company requirements but
here is what I do:
In a 25+ client setup with > 15 TB of data currently on tape for
systems I mostly do the Monthly Schedule (in the docs) with a full
each month, incrementals each day and differentials every sunday that
the full does not run. I keep my tapes with a 1 year volume retention
time and I do this mostly with a 24 slot 2 drive LTO2 autochanger. For
my user share backups I use 10 DLT tapes in a single DLT-IV drive with
the same monthly schedule but only a 2 month retention period.  I also
have volumes that I do not recycle. Each of these job types goes to
its own pool. I do not use offsite backups so I can not comment on
that.
