I recently noticed that two of my monthly tapes were purged, and I'm 
trying to figure out why.

My pool definition:

Pool {
   Name = Monthly
   Pool Type = Backup
   Recycle = no                        # Bacula can automatically recycle 
Volumes
   AutoPrune = yes                   # Prune expired volumes
   Volume Retention =  2 years
   Volume Use Duration = 1 month
   Maximum Volumes = 12
   LabelFormat = "Monthly"
}

I was looking at the Volume recycling docs here:

http://bacula.org/manuals/en/concepts/concepts/Automatic_Volume_Recycling.html

And it seems like these volumes should not be pruned until the Volume 
Retention period is met.

This is Bacula 2.0.1 (yes, it's old, I'm stuck on FreeBSD 4.11 for the 
foreseeable future).
