no, memory is not the problem.
as I said, it was working just fine (and fast) with the previous settings

Just a guess, but you might be short on RAM for these settings.
Mod_perl can be a memory hog and doesn't maintain the shared pages from the
fork() long because of the way perl reference-counts variables.
