Good luck with that. Ssh, Rsync, tar, and smbclient are the 'other
tools', and once you understand what they do, backuppc is fairly
intuitive and it's automation and web interface are much easier to use
than the low-level tools themselves. These are things you basically
need to know to administer any unix-like system - and once learned will
apply across most of them.
There should be no need to read source, though. Just pick which xfer
type is appropriate (or if you want advice, describe your potential
targets and the OS they run), and learn enough about how it works to set
the documented configuration variables for backuppc - which you can
mostly do through it's web interface.
