Here's a completely off the wall solution that I'm not entirely sure
will work...

Have the client determine it's own IP and then upload a file to your
BackupPC server (ftp, scp, or other method). Then setup BackupPC to
run a shell script (or python, perl, etc) prior to starting the backup
that will process the uploaded files and make updates to your
/etc/hosts file.

For this to work I'm assuming that updates to /etc/hosts are work
immediately and are not just check/cached on boot.

Complicated but it would remove any dependency on DNS...
