Sorry about that. Backup is done using rsync.

I bumped the verbosity to 4, and perusing through the logs, but didn't see anything glaringly wrong.  The end of the last bad xferlog showed:

Maybee you could tell us which backup method you use!?
- you could improve log verbosity on server side
- you could try "watch lsof /var/lib/backuppc"
