Sorry about that. Backup is done using rsync.
I bumped the verbosity to 4, and perusing through the logs, but didn't see anything glaringly wrong. The end of the last bad xferlog showed:

I rebooted the backup server (I had already rebooted obrien), and the full backup has been running since yesterday.
