I am having a problem backing up one of my computers - a Linux version 2.6.30-2-686 (Debian 2.6.30-8) (waldi AT debian DOT org) (gcc version 4.3.4 (Debian 4.3.4-3) ). The backuppc server is also Debian - Linux version 2.6.26-2-686 (Debian 2.6.26-19lenny2) (dannf AT debian DOT org) (gcc version 4.1.3 20080704 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.2-25)). I am using rsync over an ssh tunnel across my private LAN.

The transfer log shows that the backup just stops at file, but does not complete the file name. For example,
full backup started for directory /
Running: /usr/bin/ssh -q -x -l root beagle /usr/bin/rsync --server --sender --numeric-ids --perms --owner --group -D --links --hard-links --times --block-size=2048 --recursive --ignore-times . /
Xfer PIDs are now 15012
Got remote protocol 30
Negotiated protocol version 28
Sent include: /etc
Sent include: /home
Sent include: /root
Sent exclude: /*
*********** lots of successful transfers about 3.0+ GB of data **********
create 644 1002/1002 1078 home/katie/.mozilla/firefox/t7hd74mu.default/chrome/userChrome-example.css
create 644 1002/1002 663 home/katie/.mozilla/firefox/t7hd74mu.default/chrome/userContent
That last file name should be /home/katie/.mozilla/firefox/t7hd74mu.default/chrome/userContent-example.css.

The transfer use to stop at /home/katie/.metacity/sessions/some_long_file_name. I researched the metacity sessions, and they don't seem to be important, so I just deleted the files in the metacity/sessions directory, and the backup went father, but still quits as shown above.

The log file says:
2010-02-02 07:00:02 full backup started for directory /
2010-02-02 08:24:15 Got fatal error during xfer (Child exited prematurely)
2010-02-02 08:24:20 Backup aborted (Child exited prematurely)
Also, I am not backing up all of /, just /home, /etc, /root.

I have two other Linux machines on the same net that backup flawlessly.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Mark
