you don not need to recompile entire kernel, samba is enough :-D

You can apply this patch to the samba source and then recompile it.

In my Debian Lenny i have samba  3.2.5.
After smbclient source download, i need to edit only this file:
source/libsmb/clientgen.c
(this is the original line:
cli->timeout = 20000;
), and then recompile and reinstall.
