That is correct; many of the filesystem features on which BackupPC relies
are implemented quite differently, to the extent that they're available at
all under Windows XP.

Yes, that would work, since it would be ... running a version of Linux. 
Keep in mind that its drain on the virtualized network and filesystem
might be considerable.

Errr...  If you scroll up to your last paragraph, you just suggested that
you just use Linux in a virtual machine, so I'm not entirely sure what to
tell you, except that *nix is required.  Not necessarily Linux, of course.
