that is the only logical thing to do. You're saying the client machine to be
backed up is actually named "localhost" (which coincidentally maps to the
BackupPC server's loopback address), so that is what is pinged. If you said
the host name was actually "remotehost", wouldn't you expect that to be pinged?

That said, it really depends on your PingCmd. If you set, for example,

        $Conf {PingCmd} = '/usr/bin/ssh -ql administrator remotehost.com ping 
-c 1 10.0.0.254';

that may or may not work, because the user name 'administrator' suggests you're
talking to a Windoze machine. But if you've got sshd, you might have ping, and
it might produce sane output and exit code ...
