If you start off using packages, it's best to keep using packages.
Clobbering your package-managed install with a tarball install is likely to
lead to issues down the line when you try to upgrade your system and the
package wants to be updated... except it isn't there anymore.

If you can't wait for someone to package 3.2 up; make your own. it's not
that hard to learn to do, and it makes downgrading trivial. it's probably
worth the effort to learn to make a package (especially given that you have
the 3.1 source packages available); in order to save yourself the pain,
uncertainty, and hassle that will come when you try to downgrade a tarball
install. (Plus, the knowlege will serve you in good stead for other
applications, not just backuppc).
