I do it every day. It was so easy that I don't even recall what I had
to do. I've turned off SMB.

The command I use is

        rsync -avz --progress --delete /home/ root AT example.CChem.Berkeley 
DOT EDU::backup

I have 3 ReadyNAS boxes. They're not the fastest device in the world
but they're OK. If you read their user forums you'd be a little discouraged
but I think they work fine for the most part.
