grumpy:~# pkg-config --version
0.21
grumpy:~# pkg-config glib-2.0 --modversion
2.12.4

I think I got it: I'm getting bitten by compiling 64bit as I didn't
notice that I had a CFLAGS='-m64' that sneaked in my environment...
I guess I'll need to get the source of glib and compile it 64bit.
Any hints?
