well, that's what I figured after looking on the gtk site
but then something is amiss with the config stuff on my box
as I get this error message at the configure step:

./configure --enable-kitchen-sink
(ok no joke, I used '--with-user=amanda --with-group=disk')

...
checking for GLIB - version >= 2.2.0... no

dpkg reports 2.12.4 installed:
