"Should" is not a computer science term. Looks like a hardware error;
are you willing to provide further details about your hardware and
software setup? It's easy to provide them; I'll start: I'm using a
Spectra Logic 2K here.

We've been running in this configuration for 5+ years now.  The 
configuration works.  Yes, I could supply the configuration but it 
really doesn't change anything.  Amanda should not use 3 tapes and 
write 0 bytes to them, no matter what the configuration is.
