That rings a bell somewhere. Hasn't there been once a report on this list from someone whose zipped backups got corrupted at every (other) GB mark? Something with chunks on the holding disk having a header that didn't get stripped off when writing to tape?

That would of course explain a lot. I wasn't able to find anything on this in the mailing list archives, though, and I haven't been able to identify header data (except for the one at the start) within the dump files, but of course, these are a bit difficult to work with, and I may have looked in the wrong place or for the wrong thing.

Question: Do you know if I can get gzip to report where exactly the mismatch is found?

Anybody remember which version had this problem, and whether that gave the same symptoms?
