Not really amanda related, but what the hell.
I get the same problems on a harddrive in my laptop. The drive is in fine
working order, it seems to be a relatively harmless driver (timing) problem.
Being unable to set dma transfers is normal for an udma drive, try to use
hdparm -X 66 /dev/hd<?>
