It appears that the use of localhost just bit you.  The next version 
of amanda according to what I've just read here will begin to warn of 
this condition, requireing you to use FQDN's only.  It appears thats 
the only way to stop the use of localhost.  Its bad because localhost 
is the working machine, and while it may also be the server machine, 
it is by nature not a unique address.  To function correctly, every 
machine on your local network MUST have a unique, resolvable, Fully 
Qualified Domain Name, aka "FQDN"
