What authentification method are you useing?  If .amandahosts, then 
this file must exist as "/home/amanda/.amandahosts", and contain both 
the FQDN and the user as used in the disklist.

What user is configured into amanda?  It must be that user who runs 
amcheck, as in "su amanda -c 'amcheck -c /config/'"
