Thanks, Jon, I didn't know the internals.

So, my Seagate 20G/40G (Archive Python 06408) is rated "2.75 (native)
to 5.5 MB/sec (compressed)." DDS-4 tape at 20G uncompressed, 2*20=40G
(two passes), 40,000MB divided by 2.75 MB/sec equals 14,545 seconds, or
242 minutes or 4 hours. Wow, that quick?!

BUT, I am using the 2.4.2 tapetype, so I'll go and compile and run the
2.4.4 version. Thanks for the heads-up.

Do your own math.

tapetype should run at nearly the full speed of the tape drive.

It will do two complete passes.

Find out the manufacturers rated speed for the drives.
divide 40GB (2*20) by that speed.

If it takes even double that time, something is wrong.

For example, my dds3 tapes are 12GB, rated at about 1MB/sec.

24GB/1MB = 24000 seconds (you know to check my math)

24000/3600 sec/hr = 6.67 hrs.

If it went anywhere near 13 hrs I'd abort and figure out what was
wrong.

Have you gotten a recent tapetype? Do not, DO NOT, use the one from
2.4.2.

Tapetype can be compiled independent of the rest of amanda.
