I know, so we have 128 GB in use on the filesystem, and about 30 GB free on 
disk because apparently now a db backup can copy archived log files back to the 
active log directory.

that would make a valid recommendation if the active log was filling up during 
the backup window, or for that matter any other activity on the server. As 
stated, this server appears to be idle. No sessions, no processes, no activity 
whatsoever. So there should be (I guess) also 0 transactions in progress on the 
database.

( I thought the max was 128 GB, turns out that with 8.1 this has een raised to 
512 GB)
