If you look at the links on the page you referred to, you'll see that
"fix packs" tend to have three numbers, and "interim fixes" tend to
have 4.
So 5.5.2 is a fix pack for 5.5, to which 5.5.2.12 might be applied if
you don't want to move to 5.5.3
In general, they're cumulative at the lowest applicable level; you can
apply 5.5.3 to a 5.5 installation without going through 5.5.1, 5.5.2,
etc. But if you're at 5.5.0.0, and want to get to 5.5.3.x, you'll
need to get to 5.5.3.0, and then do 5.5.3.x. But check release notes.
Interim fixes seldom need a db upgrade. Fixpacks often do. Minor
versions usually do.

If you have nothing constraining your choice, "The most recent
fixpack" is a good rule of thumb.
