I have no arguments against AIX as preferred TSM platform - I am
recommending it to my customers (and would look silly if claim the
opposite :-).
But having no experience with mainframes cannot compare it from first
hand. Also the arguments on hand were many times shown on this forum:
usually AIX box is not shared while every mainframe MIPS is counted; I/O
troughput is comparable, etc.
OTOH sometimes it's just a matter of maturity: PCs are 20+ years old but
are used as servers since 10-12 years; UNIX is 30+ years old but current
versions have approx. 15 years of history; while mainframes are 50 years
old and many problems (like tape management fro example) were solved
decades ago.

I know, I know... an oversight. boy has this snowballed on me. However,
I still maintain that Unix is the preferred platform.

Joe,

if you look at the line above (which ought to mean July 9th 1998) then you
should interpret the IPL date as March 18th 2001, isn't it.
So it would be not once a month but once every two years :-)

Once a month... too often.

Though I'm not advocating someone install TSM or TSM on a mainframe,
I'll offer that we don't IPL our mainframe very often. Here's the
output of a command I just entered ...

  q cplevel
VM/ESA Version 2 Release 3.0, service level 9803
Generated at 07/09/98 12:19:20 EST
IPL at 03/18/01 07:17:35 EST

But then the mainframe isn't as big as some of our Linux/AIX/Solaris
servers. ;-)

cheers, wayne
