Check to see what storage pool the Mac data is going to.  If its going
directly to tape,  this could have an impact on performance.  Also,
what kind of server are you using?  Could the CPU usage be really high on
this machine?

I have a Quadra 950, and even running cross-country to a VM server, I
get 50KB/sec.
