Sudha, you really need to do what Jane suggested when she
said to read the comments in the file /usr/OV/conf/netmon.seed. They are
quite important; use a text editor to read them and probably to enter the
seeds. The launch_seededit is good for small tasks but to add 500 nodes
with that Java based editor would be a disaster. I avoid using it.
As to the speed of discovery, it depends on the
network. Discovering 500 local nodes would be trivial, 500 remote nodes on
slow links might take a little while but not a really long time.
Clear the databases, put "@limit_discovery" at the start of the file and a dummy
entry for a non-existent network at the end to stop discovery (I use
3.3.3.*). Once you manually build your maps get the tool from the
NetView User's Group tools area and snapshot your location.conf file and
netmon.seed file.
You should also take the advice to go to that class; it
will save you a great amount of time. As Jane said, you're at chapter five
of the current class material, chapter two of the 1998 version, and there are at
least eleven chapters. Go to the class before you wear out your helpers on
this mailing list.

Dear Jane,
Ok. Thanks for your prompt reply. Since im in remote location i cannot take
the course right now. I'm also going through netview documents and i can see you
guyz are doing great work here answering most of the questions. Can you please
guide me for this seedfile discovery?
1. Do i need to clear the databases before implementing the new seed
file?
smit nv6000
Maintain-->clear databases
2. When launching the see editor via launch_seededit, can we give the list
of hostnames we need to discover in Set initial Discovery
3. Do we need to give anything in Limit Discovery--Limit by IP
address?
4. How long it will take (say example 500 nodes) to discover
approxiamtely?
Also, let me know if you anyone knows a mailing-list/Forums for TEC
and ITM like the one you are having for Netview.
I need it for some event correaltion exercises.

Hi
Sudha, You know - you are now covering the NetView for Unix for
Administrators class - unit 5 topics. I know this course is
offered in India and I really would recommend that you try and attend it
as it will answer so many of your questions, as well as giving you lots of
practical exercises where you can make mistakes on someone else's
kit!!
Failing that, you need to read up on the netmon seedfile and
about location.conf - by default you will find examples in /usr/OV/conf
and they both have lots of commented lines at the top that document
their functionality.
Cheers, Jane
