+1 on Linux vs. Windows for master.

Also save yourself the Googling.  You WILL find people that say they’ve changed server name themseves but in the end you’ll find one of two things about this:

1)      They are talking about versions significantly older than 6.0 when NetBackup moved from flat files to database.

2)      They had issues 6 months after doing the conversion themselves because much of what needs to be changed is hidden.

It is not correct that Symantec (Veritas) won’t share all the steps they do for converting names with their end users but the simple fact is they do not.   You MUST pay their professional services for this to work properly.

If you must change from Linux to Windows I believe there ARE documents at Symantec’s site for how to do this but again ONLY if you keep the same name for the master.   (At the time I researched a couple of years back I ran across cross-platform migration docs but don’t recall if they were Windows to UNIX/Linux or Linux/UNIX to Windows.   Note that migrating from one UNIX flavor to another UNIX flavor or to Linux is documented and very simple but again ONLY if you keep the same name for master.

I will second what Tom said!

If you insist on going to Windows, let Symantec help.

However, Linux is only going to increase, thanks to continued support through virtualization, so this won't be wasted knowledge.

I've been involved in moves from Windows to Solaris to Linux.  My advice: this is a perfect opportunity for your admin to develop some new skills with Linux to enhance their career options.  I'd leave it on Linux.

I was also afraid once- but no more. I came up as a Windows admin, and had to learn Linux to run Netbackup. Performance is better IMHO on Linux, and the stability is much better.

That said- if you insist on moving to Windows- cut Symantec the check. Especially if you are changing server names. You are hitting the 2 biggest Things Which Are Simply Not Done in Netbackup: replatform and master server name change. Not something to undertake if you have a shred of doubt about your skills with the task. And not the best place to save money.

You can build a new Linux system, but I'd keep the name.  Backup/restore to change masters within a platform using the same name is not difficult.

Good luck!
